The legal/principal wife’s son. Implies that the man is of legitimate birth. The opposite of this is shu (illegitimate), which implies that the child is born of a concubine. Di children have a higher status than shu children. Even in the imperial family, if all goes according to the rules, the crown prince is the empress’ son even if he is not the eldest son.
