The Gu family attends a banquet at the general’s fu. Gu Jiu, Gu Yue, and Gu Shan greet the magistrate furen, Cai shi. Gu Jiu explores the garden, overhears Gu Yue and Xu Yuanniang discussing a letter Gu Yue delivered to Gu Cheng from Xu Yuanniang, which went unanswered. Gu Yue disparages Gu Jiu, revealing her involvement in Gu Jiu’s fall into the water.
Gu Yue and Xu Yuanniang were involved in Gu Jiu’s fall into the water last autumn. Gu Jiu discovers Ping mama acting suspiciously. Gu Jiu finds Pei Yun drugged in a secluded courtyard. Gu Jiu helps Pei Yun recover. Qingzhu reports Gu Cheng is heading towards the courtyard.
Gu Jiu intercepts Gu Cheng before he reaches Pei Yun. Gu Jiu suspects Xie shi is behind the scheme to harm Pei Yun. Gu Jiu confronts Gu Cheng and pretends not to know what he was doing there. After Gu Cheng leaves, Gu Jiu returns to Pei Yun and lies about who came to the courtyard.
Gu Jiu and Pei Yun leave the courtyard together. Pei Yun, recognizing Jiang Yan’s beauty, warns Gu Jiu about keeping her close. Pei Yun reveals she is Lu hou’s daughter and offers Gu Jiu an opportunity to send Jiang Yan to the capital. Gu Jiu and Pei Yun part ways, agreeing to keep the day’s events a secret. At the banquet, Gu Zhen is humiliated when a caterpillar is placed on her.
Gu Jiu helps a humiliated Gu Zhen. Gu Jiu suspects Bai yiniang is behind Gu Zhen’s embarrassment. Gu Zhen asks to stay in the guest room, too ashamed to return to the banquet. Later, Gu Jiu plans to use the pond to her advantage.
Gu Jiu falls into the pond and frames Gu Yue. Qingmei accuses Gu Yue of pushing Gu Jiu and reveals Gu Yue was behind Gu Jiu’s fall the previous year. Qingmei accuses Xu Yuanniang of knowing about the previous incident and not stopping it. Liu Zhao appears and helps Gu Jiu.
He also helps Gu Jiu stage her return. Gu Jiu returns, pretending to be weak, and Qingmei reveals that Gu Jiu knew who pushed her previously. Xie shi tries to deflect blame, but the crowd sympathizes with Gu Jiu.
Cai shi, the magistrate’s wife, confronts her daughter, Xu Yuanniang. Cai shi warns Xu Yuanniang about Gu Yue’s ruthless nature and advises her to distance herself from Gu Yue. Xie shi visits Gu Jiu, bringing Gu Yue to apologize. Gu Yue proclaims her innocence. Gu Shan apologizes to Gu Jiu on Gu Yue’s behalf, but Gu Jiu remains firm and warns Gu Shan not to interfere.
The family returns to the fu. Gu daren arrives at Gu Jiu’s residence, questioning her. Qingmei begs Gu daren for justice for Gu Jiu. Xie shi arrives with Gu Yue and Gu Shan. Gu Ting accuses Gu Yue, who admits to pushing Gu Jiu into the water last year.
Gu daren deciding to punish Gu Yue, but Xie shi suddenly claims to be pregnant. Gu Yue proclaims Gu Jiu framed her. Gu Jiu and Gu Yue argue. Gu daren reduces Gu Yue’s punishment. Gu Jiu questions the timing of Xie yi‘s pregnancy. Gu Jiu instructs Qingmei to inform Gu Quan about Pei Yun’s situation.
