“You say… you know who this gift was meant for?” Leng Weiran’s tone subtly slowed down as he studied her with a contemplative gaze.

His daughter had always been self-serving—some would call it knowing how to adapt, others would call it selfishness. But at least she had always understood boundaries, never asking for things that weren’t hers. That’s why, in the eyes of outsiders, she was just another forgettable rich heiress.

Yet now, as she sat there, calmly stating these words, he found himself unable to dismiss them as mere bluffing.

“This morning, D City was sealed off. Ordinary people can’t get in or out.” Leng Yiyao idly rubbed her earlobe, her gaze flicking to the shattered pieces on the floor. “Our family built its fortune on heavy industry, yet you and my brother actually thought you could expand into this business? Absolutely delusional.”

Was this really a daughter speaking to her father? It sounded more like a father scolding his foolish son.

Leng Weiran was so enraged he let out a cold laugh, but before he could even retort, her next words rendered him speechless.

“You want to meddle in the arms trade? You should first check how many lives the Leng family has to spare!”

The moment her voice fell, Leng Yirou, who had been silent all this time, visibly flinched.

Her head snapped toward their father, her face pale with disbelief. “Arms trade?”

Across the empire, aside from the military, who would dare touch something like that?

The empire’s power was divided between the government, the royal family, and the military, but everyone knew that only the military was an impenetrable iron fortress—strictly disciplined from top to bottom. Apart from that supreme figure who overlooked the world from above, who would dare lay a hand on the military’s territory?

Forget being killed—if they were caught, it was standard procedure for their entire family to be wiped out.

Leng Yiyao glanced at her sister, thinking that this girl’s courage was practically crumbling before her eyes.

The deal hadn’t even gone through yet, so what was with that living-on-the-brink-of-death expression? Who was she trying to impress?

Leng Yirou was already trembling, but before she could confirm whether it was true or not, her father’s terrifyingly cold expression stopped her in her tracks.

“You’re so sure that I’m getting involved in the arms business?” Leng Weiran’s face remained impassive, but a storm was already raging in his heart.

The daughter he had always dismissed as a frivolous second-generation heir had such sharp eyes, while the elder daughter—whom he had invested in, sent abroad, and held in high regard—was utterly useless in this situation.

Had he completely misjudged them all these years?

“When Xi Le left, his expression looked awful,” Leng Yiyao said with a light laugh. “Which means the people arriving in D City today are far from ordinary officers.”

She had no problem spelling it out plainly.

After all, if this family was truly foolish enough to dig its own grave, she would be forced to spend extra time and effort forging a new identity for herself just to survive.

Rather than wasting that energy, she might as well wake up this self-proclaimed genius of a middle-aged patriarch.

“You and my brother sent an extravagant gift. Clearly, you don’t even have access to the recipient, so you’re hoping that wealth alone will impress them.” She leaned back, speaking in a matter-of-fact tone.

“In the business world, this is a common tactic—show your financial strength first to establish credibility in negotiations. But…”

She suddenly looked at him with utter disdain, as if he were a child playing with mud—something completely unpresentable.

“Are you absolutely certain that he’ll allow an outsider like you to meddle in his territory?”

From what she remembered, the military’s most powerful figure was someone whose words were absolute.

This was not a person whose actions could be guessed at or whose favour could be won through flattery.

Were they sure… they could withstand the consequences of his wrath?
